I have quilts on the brain.
I don’t doubt that it has something to do with The Virtual Quilting Bee. I am excited to be working with these talented ladies. Excited, but so nervous. Really nervous. Just so you know.
And Daria’s pillows have added fuel to the fire. Oh. My. Goodness.
Then there is this beauty that Stefani owns. I’ve had dreams about it. Multiple dreams.
But then I stumbled across this one. After I saw these squares. Oh me, oh my!
I started a pile. My X string quilt pile. In colors that go in my guest room. You can’t see all the fabrics here – the pile is too big. Maybe I should edit it. Maybe not. I think it needs some darker greens. And maybe some mustard-y yellows. I’m wrapping my brain around it all, figuring how I can make it so it will look like a stash quilt (which it is, by the way) without being too entirely random. Does that make sense? Random looking, but actually very well thought out is the goal. I wonder how I can do that without it taking entirely too much time.
There are practical issues, too. Like geometry and math. You know – calculating exactly how many x’s I will need to make the right size quilt.
Pass the calculator, please.
Loving those colored fabric squares you picked out!
Now that, my dear, is a quilt project. Studied randomness is a difficult art indeed. I found a large piece of flannel hanging on the wall to be a huge help – I could put stuff up there, step back, rearrange, step back. It’ll be gorgeous when it’s done.
that is a lovely audition of fabrics up there. I hope they all get callbacks!
It sure is some beatifull fabrics and as you probably know I love the colours:-)
Oh man! All that eye candy makes me want to quilt too!
Can’t wait to see what beautiful things you create!
I think I have most of those in my stash!
Good luck on the project, that sounds like a fun thing to be a part of.
looking good! I love how we all get quilty at the same time. Can’t wait to see your wip!
I love the colors. The VQB has my little quilt brain working overtime too.
Yes! Do it! Wonderful quilts happening out there. Love what you have chosen for this one. Am also in love with that turtle quilt of Stefani’s… *sigh* You’ve got great inspiration. Ready…set..go!
It’s just amazing how difficult it is to do random!!!!
That looks like a big pile of goodness.
What about making all of the Xs in the same fabric or at least the same color. Do you know what I mean? Something akin to what Amanda Jean did in her recent log cabin quilt (http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2212368531/). That would create some continuity and I think you’d just have to make the outside strips the same color/fabric before you cut them into triangles.
Sounds fun, and I love the fabrics. Did you hear it was quilting month over at Sew Mama Sew? http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=378
That X string quilt is really awesome! And my husband is now wanting one with the turtles. Thanks for posting those. After a long day at work math would be way too much for my brain!!
gorgeous fabrics – can’t wait to see the end result
great fabrics!
Those colors are all so beautiful together! Love, love, love!!!
yeah, the calculator part? that’s why i like to make up quilts as i go along! call it lazy, but i call it creative! 🙂
Hey! Just fyi, I nominated you for a You Make My Day award — more on my blog!
Wow, those are some amazing quilts! I have total quilt fever right now too, and I JUST finished one!
My suggestion on how to tie the quilt together a little more would be to buy a few yards of one basic color (like a pink or green based on what you have there) and use that in with the rest of your stash, so there’s one color all the same tying it together.
The math is half the fun!
Can’t wait to see how this quilting bee project comes along!
Man is there something in the air or what? I guess its just that time of year, when thoughts turn to all things snuggly. Those gorgeous fabrics are so full of hope for spring though!
Already it looks like you’re going to create something really special.
So fun to see that my turtles are still visiting you at night:)
Wow what an exciting group to be a part of. I love the pile of fabrics you’re collecting and I’m sure your quilt will be just gorgeous!
I too have had quilts on the brain, two to be exact. One made with leftover men’s shirts (from my aprons) and one based on a dress I had when I was a teenager (wish it still fit) that I would like to cut into and make a quilt for our bed. Part of my new year’s plan is to make a quilt, I just don’t know what pattern. Good thing there’s an endless supply of ideas on the internet. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
i am forwarding your post to my husband. every time i make a quilt i am thankful for my degree in mathematics. he rolls his eyes and mumbles something about a good use of a $70,000 degree. sigh. love the colors.
I’ve chosen you for the Excellent Blog Award (which is probably surprising because I never comment on your blog, but I do subscribe!) If you’d like to participate, check out my January 29th post: http://plentitude.blogspot.com/2008/01/thanks.html
ooooooooo…I am soooooooo excited about you making a quilt. such pretties from your stash!
I dream about quilts, too. 😉
That’s going to be a beautiful quilt, i can’t wait to see the finished product! I’d feel pretty at home as a guest sleeping under such a fantastic work of art!!
beautiful colour choices. btw…welcome home. now i am going to have that nursery rhyme going through my head too!
I made a string strppy quilt back in the summer. it was a lot of fun and very easy to do too. http://diddledaddledesigns.blogspot.com/2007/07/strippy-quilts.html
ooohhhh, that has the fixins to be so fabulous. I’ve had quilts on the brain too. White quilts, with skinny strips, randomly quilted. Perhaps with a bit of gray. Or bento box pattern quilts, in contemporary colors, including mustard. Oh yes.
Beautiful quilt!! I am getting ready to quilt my first more difficult quilt as well for the baby’s nursery!
Cant wait to see what you come up with! 😀
That is one luscious pile of fabrics! It is going to be one heck of a gorgeous quilt!
oh man- all of those are so so beautiful! those pillows are so amazing.
I could see where it would be hard to choose what to do~
I just told Stefani the other day that her turtle quilt inspired me to want to start quilting. I just love that one. I’m totally new to quilting and patchwork, more or less, so I still have that childlike “oh, I can do that” attitude — wait till I actually try to MAKE a turtle quilt… : )
I’m sure your squares will be lovely. I’m definitely digging the fabric swatches pictured above.
i know i’m going to be kicking myself for bowing out of the virtual bee…ugh. i love the colors in your pile above. Is your guest room the room that you made the window seat cushion for? or am I remembering that wrong? can’t wait to see what you do…
and hope all power/phone/dsl is restored soon. those kinds of things make a mother crazy!
I love the color combinations you have there. I’m working on my first quilt right now (now that my machine is finally, finally back from the shop!) and I’m so excited!
