I recently received a copy of Tina Givens' new book, Sew Tina, which is published by Lark Crafts. Tina is well-known for her fabric designs and sewing patterns and this book is a good marriage of the two. The book includes many clothing items in sizes 3 months to 7 along with complete patterns. There are booties and hats, dresses, tunics, pants, bloomers and more. Tina also included many accessories in the book and these are what caught my eye.
I think this tulle bed canopy is super sweet. It looks like a fun and manageable project. I happen to know one eight, almost nine, year old who has been begging for something like this for a long while. Hmmm…maybe for her birthday?
I have never considered making a sleeping bag for my kids, but this number has me thinking about it. Tina also includes directions to make a tote for, well, toting the sleeping bag around. Great idea!
The checkboard crib quilt is a basic pattern, but would be fast to put together and would be a great baby gift. I also like the idea of a fabric Moses basket. I had one when my girls were tiny and I used it all the time. I had never considered making one out of fabric – it could be a great shower gift for new parents.
Lucky for you, Tina and Lark Crafts have offered a sweet giveaway to one of my readers. The winner will receive a copy of Sew Tina, a stack of fabric (4 yards!), stationery and sewing patterns all designed by Tina. To enter, comment on this post before 5:00 p.m. EST Friday, October 15th. Tell me what you like to make for a baby gift or what was the best baby gift you received. Good luck!
I love to make simple patchwork baby quilts. They come together so quickly and most of my friends don’t sew so they are always impressed!
wow- this book looks really great and i haven’t heard of it yet! i like to knit tiny newborn hats, sew quilts, tiny baby dresses and diaper bags. i’d love some more inspiration! thank you so much for sharing!!
The best baby gifts I received when my twin girls were born were monogrammed white baby sun hats and matching white eyelet bloomers. They were so adorable and I used them all the time until the girls outgrew them. I would love to make the hat and baby booties in Tina’s book.
I love to knit hats for babies. This December, I know of four new babies coming, so I am going to knit them candy cane striped elf hats in red and white. And for those with siblings, I will knit the siblings the same except green and white. The best baby gift I received was a hand made quilt for my oldest daughter. My husband’s grandmother was convinced I was having a boy, so the theme is ‘little boy blue.’ Even though I had a girl, she sleeps with that quilt every night. 🙂
I like the basket. It can be used later for toting toys, books, or anything. My best baby gift was a pretty quilt made by a co-worker of my husband. She obviously put a lot of love into it.
I really enjoy making baby gifts for my friends and family. I usually make quilts because I don’t have patterns for anything else. I think Tina’s book could inspire my future gifting! (The other art teacher in my department is expecting a baby in December!) Thanks for the giveaway!
I love to sew up cute baby booties. I’m excited to have a new baby to sew for as we just found out our friends are expecting.
I think you can never have enough quilts to cuddle with a new baby, so I think a quilt is perfect.
I love to hand knit baby items, but I also love to make baby blankets – really big soft ones that keep mom and baby warm during late night nursing sessions.
I always like to make lots of burp cloths! Not the ones with pre fold diapers, the super absorbent hand towel kind! Also way up on the list are flannel receiving blankets! You can never have enough of either of those things!!
Wow, this looks and sounds like an amazing book. I would love to win a copy. Thanks for the giveaway.
For my family, I like to make quilts with special fabric or themes. For friends and co-workers, I like to make personalized onesies.
The best baby gift I received was a satin on one side, velour on the other blanky which hasn’t left my daughter’s side. She is 4 1/2 now and hasn’t spent a night away from it except for when we left it at a hotel once. Realizing we couldn’t live without it, we hightailed it back to retrieve “Pink Blanky.” If I were giving a blanky like this as a baby gift, I would make two identical ones. That way there would always be one to cuddle…just in case.
I like to make almost anything. I don’t have any kids of my own yet, so it’s fun to make something kid related every once in awhile. Making a sweater for a baby goes so much faster than making a sweater for me 🙂
My daughter received about 6 handmade, crib-size quilts and we love each of them dearly. She loves to get them all out and make a “nest”. I wish I were prepared enough to gift quilts for new babies, as it is I am usually stretching it to knit a small hat or something like that.
a soft and snuggly baby quilt is definitely the best baby gift! thanks so much for the giveaway!
Love that fabric Moses basket…though my baby gifts are a little more modest (maybe an appliqued onesie and matching pants?)–
Looks like a great book!
I love to make quilts for new babies – and for sure a cute taggy blanket too. Thanks for the review of the book!
I usually sew some bibs – different sizes!
Thanks for the chance.
I think a quilt is always a nice baby gift.
I love knitting baby hats! And, it’s been soooooooo long since I was the guest of honor at a baby shower, I have no recollection of the gifts!
I love to make a baby quilt either crocheted or sewn. I also love making baby hats.
I like making baby gifts – usually quilts or toys. I’m going to be attempting some sweet baby shoes soon.
That canopy is marvelous! I love making the Stardust Shoes baby shoes for gifts – they turn out so well and are easily personalized.
My favorite things I received were a nursing cover and a large, simple receiving blanket. Consequently, these are my favorite things to make (and give) as gifts.
I loved getting some of my old home-sewn baby clothes from my mom and grandmother to pass on to my girls. In return, I can whip up a baby hat or two for the newbies. I love babies in hats.
Wow, what a great gift! Yes, please include me in this awesome give away!
Opps missed the last line of the give away details…My favorite baby gift for my daughter, was quilt made by my good friend Beth.
I love to make diaper pouches as gifts. . . but I am expecting baby boy #2 in Feb and would love some inspiration on how to make some fun things for this little guy.
I’m about to make my first pair of baby booties.
I usually sew a baby sling, especially since that was the gift I used the most when I had my two children. I had some other wonderful, sweet gifts, but the sling beat everything in practicality and long-term use. 🙂
The best gift I received when my daughter was born was a quilt made by my dear friend, Eva. Cora loves it so much that she sleeps with it every night. 🙂
My favorite gifts to give to new babies are quilts and burp cloths. I would love to win Tina Givens’ book.
It seems like everyone is having babies right now. I made by boyfriend’s best friend a quilt for his baby with the sailing flag from the team that the father and my boyfriend grew up sailing for. I’ve also made several tag blankies recently. I am just starting to plan a present for a baby shower coming up in November.
I love anything handmade/sewn….i love to make blankets and skirts/dresses. . and burps, carseat covers…i can’t decide.
The best baby gift was a hand-knit blanket with satin edging, knit by my mom for my youngest. Thanks for a chance to win, the canopy looks like a lot of fun!
All the best baby gifts I received for both my son and my daughter were the handmade ones. Receiving blankets, crochet blankets, etc. My daughter would love that canopy!
My oldest daughter would love the tulle bed canopy too. The best baby gift that I recieved was a Boppy pillow – it’s been used for both of our girls and was my nursing crutch!
The Moses basket does sound like a good gift. My family is expecting the addition of 2 grandnieces later this year, so the projects in this group would be great.

My usual baby gift is a hand knit hat and a board book. Thanks for the chance to win. The book looks great!
Awesome book! I make it a point to give only handmade items as baby gifts. My favorite to make is either a dress/outfit or a set of outfit + baby bonnet. They are always received with the new momma smiling and asking “Wow..You made this??”. The feeling is lovely 🙂
I know a little one around here who could benefit from that book for a long time. 🙂
My go-to baby gifts are knit hats, freezer paper stenciled shirts and small baby quilts. I adore making baby gifts.
This book looks like it’s filled with really useful patterns!
I’d love to make the crib quilt for my cousins new baby. I made my very first quilt for her first born and I want to continue the tradition!
When I have a little more time to prepare I like to crochet baby blankets, they’re so soft and unique. But if I’m just putting something together at the last minute (like this last weekend for a friend of my niece’s) I love to make matching burp cloths and baby bibs, backed with chenille. It’s such a cute and fast gift. And ironically the best baby shower gifts I received were burp cloths. I didn’t bother buying any for myself because I didn’t realize how much I would need them….boy was I wrong! Those things were a life saver!
For baby gifts I usually make softies in fabric and felt but I would love to try a baby quilt. This book looks fantastic, thanks for the chance!

Honestly, the best baby gift I received was hot food in a disposable dish. I appreciated that even more when I had my second child. I also liked the fancy burp cloths – the going-out-to-dinner ones.
Right now I’m making AMH’s Color Spectrum quilt from her recent book for a baby shower. I think it may become a good go-to gift!
My favorite gift to get would be cloth diapers by BumGenius!
The tulle canopy would make a wonderful gift!! I wish I had one too!
I love the tulle canopy and the fabric moses basket. That looks like it has some great ideas in it!
I usually knit little hats or make a set of flannel receiving blankets.
I love to make diffrent things depending on how many babies came before it in the family, what is needed etc but clothes, fabric books, quilts (if I have time) and soft toys are my go to gifts.
I recently went to a really cool baby shower though, where guests were all asked to bring a copy of their favouite childhood picture book for the new baby. It was a great idea. But didn’t stop me making a little something extra to go with it…
I love seeing babies in little bloomers. Seeing them crawling around with a lacey butt always makes me want to squeeze them! I usually make a pair or two for all baby showers. (when it’s a girl of course!)
I love to make an a coordinated set of things: dress/skirt and shirt/pants and shirt, blanket, burp cloths, and either a nursing cover or bibs. It so much fun! My favorite to receive, anything handmade, diapers, and those items I need, but just aren’t fun to buy. By the way, this looks great, that canopy looks awesome! I want to make it for myself and then when my kids are old enough to not swing from it, I’ll pass it along to them! Look forward to doing the projects in here, they look fun!
I enjoy making simple patchwork quilts for babies and toddlers. Thank you for the opportunity to win the book!
I usually make a baby quilt and/or knit a sweater. I would love to try the Moses basket. The one I used when my children were born was fabric and it was used a lot! Thanks for the giveaway.
I love to make flannel crib sheets for baby gifts…they are just so warm and cozy!
The best shower gifts I received were a stack of flannel burp cloths from my Grandma! They are fantastic! Not a day goes by when we don’t use 4 or 5!
Best baby gift I received would have to be my own. *blushing* Grandmother made me a quilt when I was little out of my baby clothes and stitched my name on it. A treasure to my heart. A quilt is a baby gift favorite either way..hands down.
I like to make a quilt for a new baby. I have also made burp cloths in the past because you can never have too many.
I love the sleeping bag idea especially. Sounds like a fabulous book!
Wow! Great looking book! I like to make bibs…
Thanks!
I like to make a small simple blanket, but for sure a hand knit hat.
Looks like a great book!
Kelly
I love to make hats for new babies in our life but the best gift I have received was a diaper bag, changing pad, and matching nursing cover.
The best gifts I received for my two babies were crib-sized quilts that my mother-in-law had made. I kept them both and hope to hand them back to my sons when their children are born. I tend to knit a blanket or occasionally – if it’s a winter baby – knit mittens and a little hat. I would love to have this book for some more ideas. And I’d love to make that crib quilt!
When my girls were babies I used a sleep cozy (an over sized sleeping bag with a two way zip for nappy changes and sleevless so that baby could regulate its own heat. It was fab because baby was never uncovered but remained cozy in its snug little sleepycozy nest. Perfect for all new mums!
i would love this!
i always give minky-flannel monogrammed blankets (just big enough for a toddler to carry around) for showers.
What a fun giveaway! We haven’t been able to have a baby yet (two years) so I can’t answer part of the question. I love making baby blankets (so fun to see them loved and used over the years), baby clothes (like doll clothes), and knitting for babies (so quick!). My standard go-to baby gift is a pair of baby mitts in a yummy soft yarn and a bright baby quilt. Since we have six nephews, I also have a stash of baby girl patterns and fabric just waiting to be made up. My husband and I joke that if we are blessed with a baby girl, we will never need to buy clothes (between my sis, sis-in-laws, mom, and mom-in-law…and the stash)!!
I’ve been making baby quilts for expecting friends for about 9 years now. I’ve probably given 20-30 quilts. Some families have up to three. I love giving something handmade to new babies. If I don’t know the family as well, I like to make a few bibs to give. That moses basket is way cool – I’d never thought of that either.
What a great giveaway! My favorite baby gift to make is a knitted hat, so quick, fun, and practical! 🙂
The best baby gifts I ever received were meals, hot and ready to eat, delivered to my door. I have so many wonderful friends! The book looks very interesting! Thanks for the chance to win. – Kingston, Ontario
I love making tiny hats, burp cloths (because you can NEVER have too many!) and appliqued onesies. All the “must haves” 🙂 Tina’s book looks awesome. I would love to have it!
found your blog when looking for toddler skirt patterns. i’ve made 3 of them and my daughter gets so many compliments 🙂
love love love the fabric moses basket!!! beats hauling those carriers around all the time.
i like to crochet hats but to give them more personality, i sew bear ears on boy ones and flowers on the girl.
Wow I’d really like to make that fabric Moses basket, what a wonderful idea!
By far my favorite gift to give and receive for babies is a handmade baby quilt. I’ve made so many and love the idea of giving babes an heirloom that they probably wouldn’t have ever had gotten if it wasn’t for me. : )
I like to give personalized amazing, simple amazing quilts. My quilts always have a message in them. That’s what I like to give.
My little girl would love the tulle canopy, she has been asking for one. One of the best gifts was home made bibs. What a great looking book.
My favorite baby gifts were always the handmade ones that we will cherish forever. I always try to personalize baby gifts with some sort of monogram or other embroidery.
I have a 5, almost 6 year old who would love that canopy as well! As for baby gifts, I have three girls, and am lucky enough to have recieved handmade blankets (different styles, different techniques, different “givers”) for each one.
Thanks!
Carrie
You can’t beat a quilt for a baby gift!
Thanks for the chance to win this lovely book.
Andi 🙂
Our Moses basket was one of our favorite gifts. We used it for a long time with our daughter and our twin boys even fit in it for a short time!
The best baby gift I received (my son is 6 months old) is a hooded bath towel! We use it every night!
Thanks for the chance to win this book!
I love her dress on the cover! just beautiful.
Thank you for entering me in your contest.
– blessings,
Audrey
For the new baby girl in my life I designed a simple pleated skirt with gathered tulle underneath. With a wide ribbon waistband it can be cinched up without elastic and is a great way to show off a scrap of fancy fabric (brocades, etc) that would otherwise be unpractical for a baby. I gave one as a gift last month and the mom used it in baby photos the next day!
My dear friend just called me today to ask me to make her bumper pad and quilt for her little one–it would be wonderful to make it from this lovely book! And I saw several projects there that my own two littles would love!
This book does look sweet! I love to make “memory quilts” as baby gifts for showers…it gives a sweet blessing as a lifetime keepsake!
My favorite baby gift was a quilt made by mother. My girl refuses to use any other blanket. She loves it that much!
Brynn P
I love to make cute nappy bags with a rolled up change mat inside.A great gift idea for newborns are cute coathangers(small ones), most of the clothes i had for my babies went in drawers but it was nice to be able to hang a few really nice clothes up on cute coathangers. This book looks super awesome- I just couldnt help but leave a comment!
What an awesome giveaway!
I love making things that will actually get used, baby blocks, stuffed dolls set are a couple I have made recently.
My fav received gifts are crocheted blankets my MIL made for each son.
What a great giveaway! I have always given pre-made items as gifts, but I’m a new knitter and sewer, so I’m hoping that any baby gifts will soon be made by me! Thanks so much!
WOW, that book looks great. I would love to get my hands on it. I like making nursing covers and matching burp cloths for gifts.
I think my new go-to pattern will be
Saartje’s Bootees http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/saartjes-bootees
in a really beautiful yarn.
hands down THE best baby gift in my experience is a good baby carrier! i loooooove making mei tais and slings and our carriers have been the single most useful item of baby gear we’ve encountered in raising these kids.
plus, they’re gorgeous and a fab way to get to wear some of my favorite fabrics every day. 🙂
I know this is maybe a bit untraditional (if you’re thinking handmade) but I always like to give books as a baby gift. I usually do a collection of board books we adore and I have a couple of compiled collections complete with music CD that I feel great about giving. The other thing I like to make for the new parents is a nice meal that’s easy to warm or oven ready. Nothing better than food in your tummy and a good read when all are sleep deprived.
My favourite gift was time and prepared meals so i didn’t have to think about dinner. I also loved my son’s sock monkey sweater. He looked so cute in it!
I have a little girl due 4 weeks from tomorrow and I’ve been considering buying a Moses basket for her since her older sister and I are constantly moving around the house. Making my own would be awesome because I could use bright fun fabric and not be stuck with boring pastels! For gifts to give, I like making receiving blankets. My 2 1/2 year old still loves snuggling with hers, and once again, bright happy colors are hard to come by in stores. They are quick to make and easy to customize with your own binding and fabric options.
I’m a knitter, so my favorite gifts to give are hats, blankets, sweaters–whatever time dictates! The fabric Moses basket is such a great idea. That’s a pattern I would love to try.
I would like to make some burp pads! These new quilted & embroidered pads are so cute, with infinite possibilities! Burp pads are used everyday, so they make a very useful & appreciated gift!
Looks like a sweet book. For babies I like to make comfy flannel quilts and crochet a simple lace around the edges- nothing fancy- but a little something extra.
I like to make quilted bibs out of fabric scraps. The best gift I ever received? Babysitting!! ALthough for #6 we never got that 🙁 LOL
Hmmm, I would love to make a quilt, though I’ve yet to do that! 🙂 As far as best gifts I’ve received….well, I do love the handmade, but I’ve received very few of those. Probably smocked dresses for my girls and a handmade doll for one of them. I’ve gotten several crocheted blankets, which are beautiful, but we do have a few too many now if that is possible!
Wow…kid clothes and booties are my favorite…looks like a great book
My favorite baby gifts to give AND to receive are baby blankets!! I love snuggling my babies under blankets, so it warms my heart at the thought of another mommy doing the same thing 🙂
[email protected]
I love the quilted sleeping bag idea. I like to make the shopping cart covers for baby gifts. Everyone seems to love them. Thanks for the giveaway!
I have two favorite baby gifts. My favorite with my son was a hooded towel that I have recreated about a million times since. Best present ever.
and with my first daughter it was a small fleece quilt that I used in the carseat and stroller. I loved it! Big enough to cover the baby- but not big enough to fall on the ground. Perfect.
My favorite gift received was an extra large hand-made hooded bath towel which has grown with our son. My favorite gift(s) to make are re-purposed animal loveys made from soft sweaters.
The best baby gift I received was a small quilt that my mother-in-law made about 30 years ago for my husband’s baby sister. She kept it all those years and gave it to us.
ive been making bibs as baby gifts for a little while and i love it! using scraps, making people smile! we got a quilt from my husbands grandma for our first child. i love quilts as gifts. so special!
I like to make big bibs for solids feedings–practical and pretty.
The loveliest gift any of my babies received was a hand-knit cardigan with the most beautiful embroidery of baskets full of flowers on the pockets and the little collar.
I like to knit new babies warm, soft wool hats and little socks.
This book looks like it could give me a few more ideas!
I like to make knitted bibs and hats and embroidered onesies. I am entering this giveaway for my girls, ages 12 and 9, for them to drool and then make whatever they like, on their machine, that they bought with their own money.
I usually make a quilt as a baby gift. The moses basket looks like it might be fun to try (and useful)
Thanks for the give-away!
My favorite baby gifts were those that were handmade…particularly the quilts that each of my boys received from their grandma and another from a “surrogate” grandma. I hope they will treasure their quilts for a long time!
A moses basket looks super cute!
I didn’t know at the time, but the best baby gift I could have received was a Moby wrap or ergo carrier. I used a sling with my first baby, and the other two with the second baby. I didn’t know how much I would want to have the baby touching me yet still be able to use my hands. I didn’t use a stroller with the second or third for months once I had these!
I would make a quilt and the moses basket for a dear friend of mine who is pregnant again after losing her first in labor. She deserves every wonderful thing I can think to make her and her newest precious child.
My daughter received many lovey knitted goodies, dress, booties and jackets from my MIL at her birth..she is now using them for her little girl…thanks for the giveaway..
I love this book and would swoon at some great fabrics. I love to make quilts for baby gifts and also love to crochet little hats for newborns.
PS – I love your blog!
I like to receive handmade baby blankets, even though I have so many, because they always remind me of the person who gifted them to us.
I love to make baby quilts. They go together so quickly compared to full-sized ones! I love the sleeping bag idea.
Wow! this book looks great, and what an opportunity! I love knitting cotton wash clothes and hats and sewing them a little outfit. thank you for the chance to win such a great prize.
i love tina’s patterns and fabrics! i want to make a quilt with owl fabrics.
songyueyu at gmail
I love making baby quilts, nothing is sweeter than cuddling with a newborn!
The best baby gift I received for my now, almost 11 mth old was a blanket knit by my friends. They each took a color and knit several rows of the blanket. I love that so much thought and love went into the blanket for my little one.
I love, love, love this book! I would be so excited to have this. We are trying desperately for our third babe and when it happens I would LOVE to make the moses basket. Thanks for the chance! (and the inspiration)
I’d like to try making that top that the little girl model has on. One of my favorites to whip up, although it’s for more like a one year old is Amy Karol’s jacket from her first book. It’s a wonderful baby gift to have down the road when everyone’s forgotten about sewing for the new cutie pie.
I’d like to make a quilt. I really believe that someday I will. Maybe by the time baby #2 gets here (undetermined at this point!). Thanks, Erin!
Quilts – love to make them for baby gifts, just made one that was an Italian flag on the front and a Swedish flag on the back, for the baby of a very intercontinental family! It was a big hit and fun to make – can’t beat that!
I love the Moses Basket..it’s great! I just found out I am going to be a Grandma (#4)..it would be a great gift for Baby May 2011
I always sew hooded towels. ! would love to expand my repertoire with some of these patterns!
I’m looking forward to this book! I always knit a blanket for new little ones. Every child needs a security blanket and I can’t bare the thought that it wouldn’t be handmade.
Hi, I always liked to receive and offer blankets, I am a blanket addicted…. Hope to be the lucky winner!
Way to go, Tina! must have for moms!
Personally I’d like to receive as a gift baby booties and lil’ quilt now (to keep it). But when my child was born I was happy with a diaper bag and a pink princess dress:))

I like to make the usual bib, burp cloth and blanket or quilt set.
This book looks like it has some fresh new ideas for me!
Such cute ideas! My favorite baby gift to is a receiving blanket big enough for chunky babies.
I would love that fabric Moses basket! I’m expecting my 2nd in May, so I’ll be making lots of my own baby stuff soon! I’m working on an I-spy quilt for my daughter, who is 3, and I think they are some of the best baby / kids gifts because they get so much enjoyment out of them!
i love to make baby quilts as gifts and my favorite gift was my bassinet my mother gave us. (thank you mom!) thanks for this giveaway!
I usually stick with a baby quilt and some kind of tote bag, for carrying all that baby gear around!
I’m pretty new to sewing, but would love to make toys, and little-boy clothes, because I’m expecting a son and the ones in the shops here are soooo boring, the are just small versions of grown up clothes.
Wow, love this book! Best baby gift – hand knit teeny tiny sweater.
Would looooove to win!
I’m currently making a crocheted baby blanket for my dear friend’s new baby on the way. I will probably make her a few bibs/burp cloths and things, too. I usually have to rein myself in a bit… I just love making baby stuff!
The Tulle canopy would make a great gift for a certain tomboy girl to show her the feminine side of girls 🙂
I love getting handmade baby hats and sweaters as gifts
Thanks
I love making blankets and quilts partly because of how much we love and use the handmade blankets and quilts we received as baby gifts.
I love Tina’s fabrics, and this book seems to be very inspiring!
Best baby gift… Hmm. I’d say I pretty much appreciated the microwave steamcooker 🙂 It’s still in full use with baby no. 3. But I guess you mean something knitted or sewn? In that case: the sweet little off-white sweater with cable that my mother knitted. It had been decades since she laid down the knitting needles, but since that tiny sweater, which was lovely in itself, she picked said needles back up and went off on a knitting frenzy for her three grandchildren! So that made the gift of the sweater only more beautiful 🙂
Sabine
I love to crochet baby blankets for family and friends.
Thanks for a chance to win! I love Tina Given’s fabrics – they are so whimsical!! I just made some receiving blankets, diaper cloths and bibs for my niece. I know my two daughter would love, love, love the sleeping bags!!
I love to make baby booties and patchwork bibs to give as baby gits… simple and quick to make while still being useful!
Love the canopy – that is soo dreamy.
I love making diaper bags. Friends can never have too many!
Thanks for the opportunity & the great giveaway!
